Whilst yes the modern action film contains nudity to entice older audiences (or fanservice as referred to in anime) this film does it to enhance its message. Anyone who is mature enough to handle and be interested in philosophical movies like this one is mature enough to watch Ghost in the Shell. I'm 14 and watched this the content will not be a problem as long as your child understands the context, so the 15+ is flexible. It is fittingly disturbing and far from lighthearted. This is a serious and intellectually intense movie. Still, they are not perfect characters and are realistic personas. The Major's friends and associates are honest and look out for each other, especially Batou. Major Kusanagi doesn't exist as an intelligent and strong woman, she exists as an intelligent and strong person who happens to be a woman. Unlike many anime and action films, women aren't objectified at all. Role models: The Major, though she is a complex character, is a great example of a strong woman lead who doesn't have 'strong woman' as her sole personality trait. Along the line of positive messages, the characters look out for each other and are sympathetic, adhering to somewhat of a moral code. It will stick with its viewers for a long time.

This movie will spark discussion and thought and is no fun action flick. Important and shockingly relevant questions are raised about the essence of life and humanity, the line between AI and human brain being blurred a la Roko's Basilisk. Messages: There is no clear message forced that is for the viewer to decide. One asks if the other is drunk, and they reply that due to their cyborg body they are unable to be. The usage of swear words here is reasonable given the characters' circumstances.ĭrugs: Two characters drink beer. 'Sh*t', 'damn', and 'hell' are used often. Swearing: Three uses of 'f*ck'-two are used in the background, one use is clear. If your child is mature enough to acknowledge that the female body does not have to be sexualized, there is no problem here. No genitals are shown, but breasts are exposed in about a quarter of the scenes in nonsexual context. However, the main character and another cyborg body are frequently seen in the nude. Sex: No sex or sexual references whatsoever. None of the violence exists for shock value, nor is it treated as mere entertainment. At the end, a cyborg body is torn apart after, mainly machinery is shown but the body's 'muscles' resemble those seen in a human anatomy diagram. A disturbing scene in which a humanlike cyborg body jerks and vibrates. Another man is shot later on, and his bloodied ribcage is seen in the foreground. One gory (animated, cartoonish) scene at the beginning shows a man being shot you see his bloody spinal column very briefly. Violence: Frequent gun usage, including pistols, machine guns, and the like, but they are mainly fired into buildings and machines.
